Overview

Likouala is a department in the far north of Congo, bordered by the Central African Republic and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The department is named after the Likouala River, a tributary of the Congo River system, and is covered in dense equatorial rainforest and extensive swamplands. It is one of the most remote and sparsely populated parts of the country, with Impfondo as its capital.

Likouala is a destination for serious adventurers. The department is home to the Lac Télé Community Reserve, centred on Lake Télé, a large natural lake in a remote forest area. The reserve protects forest elephants, gorillas, and a remarkable diversity of waterbirds. The Likouala River system is the main transport artery, with pirogues connecting isolated river villages.

Travel in Likouala is extremely challenging. There are no paved roads, and most travel is by pirogue along the rivers. The rainy season (October–May) makes most areas inaccessible. French and Lingala are essential.

When to Visit

The drier season from June to September offers the best (least impossible) conditions. The heaviest rains fall from March to May and October to November, when many areas are completely cut off.

Likouala's cuisine is based on river fish (capitaine, tilapia), cassava (chikwangue), and smoked or dried fish. Fresh produce is limited. Impfondo has a few basic maquis.

Culture & Festivals

Likouala is home to the Likouala people and other riverine communities. Music and dancing are central to village celebrations. The Baka (pygmy) people live in the forest areas.
