Why visit Zhenyuan?
Zhenyuan (镇远) is a county town in Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture, eastern Guizhou Province. The Wuyang River carves an S-shaped bend through limestone karst formations, dividing the historic settlement into two sections linked by stone bridges. Founded in 202 BC during the Han Dynasty as a military garrison on the postal route connecting central China to Yunnan and Myanmar, Zhenyuan served as a river trade hub for Han soldiers, local Miao and Dong populations, and merchants from Hunan and Jiangxi. According to the 2020 census, Zhenyuan County has a population of 189,715.
The old district retains Ming and Qing dynasty architecture, including courtyard houses, narrow stone alleys, multi-tiered fire-walls, and merchant guild halls. Across the river on the northern cliffs of Mount Zhonghe, the Qinglongdong complex features multi-faith temple architecture built directly into vertical rock faces. Visitors come to explore these cliffside temples, hike the ridge along Mount Shiping for views of the river bend, take evening river cruises, and try Guizhou dishes like sour fish soup.
Zhenyuan experiences a humid subtropical monsoon climate with an annual average temperature of 16°C (61°F). Winters are cool and damp, with January temperatures averaging 3°C to 9°C (37°F–48°F). Summers are warm and humid, with July temperatures averaging 25°C to 31°C (77°F–88°F). Annual precipitation ranges between 1,000 mm and 1,100 mm, with the rainy season concentrated from May through August.
