Kirundo

Kirundo is a province in northern Burundi bordering Rwanda, Burundi. The provincial capital, also called Kirundo, sits on the central plateau at roughly 1,700 m elevation. The landscape is characterised by rolling hills, valleys, and agricultural terraces.

For travellers, Kirundo offers access to Lake Rwihinda Nature Reserve, a bird sanctuary. The province is off the main tourist circuit, rewarding those who venture here with authentic rural experiences.

The dry season from June to August is the best time for travel. The short dry season in December–January is a secondary option. The long rains from February to May can make roads difficult.

Kirundo town is connected to the national road network. Minibuses connect to Gitega and Bujumbura. Within the province, motorcycle taxis serve the communes.
