Banfora
Cascades, Burkina Faso
Why visit Banfora?
Banfora is the capital of the Cascades region and the most popular tourist destination in southwestern Burkina Faso. It sits at an elevation of around 300 metres in the sugar cane belt, surrounded by green hills and water bodies that give it a distinctly tropical feel. The population of roughly 30,000 includes Karaboro, Turka, and Dioula communities.
Banfora's economy is driven by the Société Sucrière de la Comoé (SOSUCO), one of the largest sugar producers in West Africa, whose vast plantations surround the town. Tourism is the second pillar of the local economy, with visitors drawn to the nearby waterfalls, lakes, and limestone peaks. The town has a relaxed, welcoming character with wide streets shaded by mango and mango trees.
The climate is milder and wetter than most of Burkina Faso: a rainy season (May–October) and a dry season (November–April). The best time to visit is December–February when the weather is at its most pleasant.

By Car / Road
Banfora is reached via the RN7 paved highway from Bobo-Dioulasso (85 km, about 1.5 hours). Frequent bush taxis and minibuses run from Bobo-Dioulasso's gare routière (about 1500–2000 CFA). From Ouagadougou, follow the RN1 west to Bobo-Dioulasso (360 km), then the RN7 south to Banfora — total journey about 440 km, roughly 6–7 hours. The road is paved for the entire route.
Banfora is compact and easy to walk, though the main market area and accommodation are spread out along the Bobo road. Motorcycle taxis (woro-woro) are ubiquitous and cost 200–500 CFA for trips within town. For excursions to Karfiguéla Falls, Lake Tengrela, and the Sindou Peaks, hire a private taxi or negotiate a bush taxi — expect around 10,000–15,000 CFA for a half-day outing. Bicycles can be rented at some hotels.
