Popovo

Targovishte, Bulgaria

Why visit Popovo?

Popovo is a town in Targovishte Province, northeastern Bulgaria, and the administrative centre of Popovo Municipality. It had a population of about 13,324 at the 2021 census, down from 15,548 in 2009, continuing the depopulation trend common across rural northeastern Bulgaria. The name derives from "pop" (priest) plus the placename suffix "-ovo," literally "the priest's village." The settlement was first mentioned in an Ottoman tax register in 1555. It was declared a district centre in 1880, overseeing 48 surrounding villages, and was officially proclaimed a town on 10 June 1883.
