Mongar

Monggar, Bhutan

Why visit Mongar?

Mongar (also spelled Monggar) is a hillside town in eastern Bhutan, the administrative headquarters of Monggar district, and the third-largest town in eastern Bhutan after Trashigang and Samdrup Jongkhar. The town sits at about 1,600 m on a ridge overlooking the Kuri Chhu valley, with a mild, pleasant climate.

Mongar is an important market and transport centre on the Lateral Road between Trashigang and Bumthang. The town is known for Mongar Dzong, one of Bhutan's newest dzongs (built in the 1950s but in traditional style), and the surrounding district produces oranges, cardamom, and woven textiles. The town has experienced rapid growth and modernisation in recent years.
