Tsimasham

Chhukha, Bhutan

Why visit Tsimasham?

Tsimasham is the district headquarters of Chhukha (also spelled Chukha) in southwestern Bhutan, located on the main Thimphu–Phuentsholing highway. The town is somewhat barren and lacks the cohesion or charm of traditional Bhutanese settlements. It exists primarily as an administrative centre and transit point, with few reasons to stop beyond a refreshment break or fuel refill.

The town's main landmark is the Chukha Dzong, a relatively new construction that lacks the antiquity and treasures of Bhutan's historic dzongs but is nonetheless an imposing structure. Since a bypass road was built, most through-traffic now skirts the town entirely, leaving its main street quiet and underpatronised. The surrounding landscape is hilly and forested, typical of southern Bhutan's subtropical zone.

How do you get there?

By Plane

The nearest airport is Paro Airport (PBH IATA), about 100 km / 3 hours north. Bagdogra Airport (IXB IATA) near Siliguri is about 160 km / 4 hours south.

By Car / Road

Tsimasham is about 2.5 hours from Thimphu and about 3 hours from Phuentsholing on the main paved highway. Buses on the Thimphu–Phuentsholing route pass through. Taxis are available from either direction.

The town centre is small and walkable. The dzong is a short walk or drive from the main street.

What are the things to do?

  • Chukha Dzong — A new dzong serving as the district administrative headquarters. While it lacks the treasures and history of older dzongs like Rinpung or Tashichho, the structure is architecturally impressive and worth a few photographs.
