Gedu
Chhukha, Bhutan
Why visit Gedu?
Gedu is a hill-town in Chhukha district, southwestern Bhutan, developed originally to house workers at the local hydroelectric plant. It now hosts a small college and is the largest settlement between Phuentsholing and Thimphu/Paro. Clinging to a steep hillside, Gedu's architecture is largely functional concrete — best viewed from a distance at night when the street lights soften the utilitarian buildings.
Most visitors pass through Gedu on the main Thimphu–Phuentsholing highway and pause here for a refreshment break rather than a destination in itself. The town's position at a midpoint on the journey makes it a practical stop for lunch or a leg stretch. The climate is temperate year-round, cooler than Phuentsholing but warmer than Thimphu.
