Zallaq

Al Janūbīyah, Bahrain

Why visit Zallaq?

Zallaq is a coastal area on the western shore of Bahrain's main island, within the Southern Governorate. While it is a small settlement in its own right, Zallaq is best known for its beaches and seaside resorts, particularly the popular Al Jazair Beach (also known as Zallaq Beach). The area offers a relaxed coastal escape from the urban intensity of Manama, with clear waters and sandy shores that make it a favourite weekend destination for Bahraini families and expatriates.

The character of Zallaq is defined by its shoreline and the nearby Al Areen nature reserve. Development has been modest compared to the east coast, preserving a more natural beach environment. The water is calm and shallow, making it suitable for swimming and paddling. Like the rest of Bahrain, the best time to visit is from November to March; summer months bring extreme heat and humidity, though the coastal location provides some relief through sea breezes.

How do you get there?

By Plane

Bahrain International Airport (BAH IATA) in Muharraq is approximately 30 km northeast of Zallaq, about a 30-minute drive via the Shaikh Khalifa bin Salman Highway and the Zallaq Highway. A taxi from the airport costs around BD 8–10.

By Car / Road

Zallaq is accessible from Manama via the Zallaq Highway (Route 250), approximately a 30-minute drive. From Riffa, the drive is about 20 minutes. The road is well-maintained and parking is available at Al Jazair Beach (small fee). Bus services from Manama reach as far as the University of Bahrain campus and Jazair Beach on the west coast; check the Bahrain Public Transport website for current routes and schedules.

A car is the most practical way to reach and explore Zallaq. The area is spread out, with the beach, the Banyan Tree resort, and Al Areen Wildlife Park scattered along the coast and nearby desert. Taxis and ride-hailing apps are available from Manama and Riffa but scarce within Zallaq itself. Walking is pleasant along the beachfront but impractical for reaching inland attractions.
