Xaçmaz (Khachmaz) is a major rayon and city in northeastern Azerbaijan, situated approximately 10 kilometers from the Caspian Sea and bordered by the Caucasus Mountains to the west and Russia to the north. The region is one of Azerbaijan's most ancient, with archaeological evidence of Bronze Age settlements, ancient fortifications, and cultural monuments spanning millennia. The city of Xaçmaz serves as the administrative center and commercial hub of the region, with a population of approximately 60,000.
The landscape transitions from the coastal lowlands near the Caspian to the forested slopes of the Caucasus foothills, creating diverse microclimates and scenery. The climate is humid subtropical, with average annual precipitation of 1,300–1,350 mm and temperatures ranging from 1–2°C in January to 25–30°C in July. The region is known for its fruit orchards, carpet weaving tradition, and rich historical heritage, including ancient Albanian churches, medieval mosques, and Bronze Age burial sites.
Xaçmaz offers a compelling combination of historical depth, cultural richness, and natural beauty that makes it one of northeastern Azerbaijan's most rewarding destinations.
When to Visit
The best time to visit Xaçmaz is during late spring (May to June) and early autumn (September to October), when temperatures are comfortable and the landscape is green. Summers are hot and humid (25–30°C), while winters bring cold weather with rain and snow. The spring transition can be rapid — warm weather arrives quickly but can fluctuate. The region's fruit harvest season (August to September) is particularly appealing for visitors interested in local produce and agricultural traditions.
