Samux (also spelled Samukh) is a rayon in northwestern Azerbaijan, located along the left bank of the Kura River approximately 380 kilometers northwest of Baku. The region encompasses a landscape of river lowlands, semi-arid plains, and the foothills of the Lesser Caucasus Mountains, which rise to the south and west. The administrative center, Samux city, serves as a modest regional hub for the surrounding agricultural communities.
The landscape is defined by the Kura River valley, which creates a fertile corridor through the otherwise semi-arid terrain. The river supports intensive agriculture in the irrigated lowlands, including cotton, grain, and fruit cultivation. The surrounding hills feature a mix of pastureland, scattered orchards, and rocky outcrops, providing a pleasant contrast to the flat river plain. The region's agricultural character is evident in the patchwork of cultivated fields that stretch along the river and up the hillside terraces.
Samux is not a major tourist destination, but it offers an authentic glimpse into rural Azerbaijani life in the country's northwestern region. The area's proximity to Ganja, Azerbaijan's second-largest city, makes it accessible for day trips, while its quieter villages and agricultural landscapes provide a more relaxed and unspoiled experience than the more heavily visited regions of the country.
When is the best time to visit?
Spring (April to June) is the most pleasant time to visit Samux, when temperatures are moderate (15°C to 25°C), the river valley is green with growing crops, and wildflowers bloom on the hillside pastures. Autumn (September to October) offers warm days, cool evenings, and the visual appeal of harvest season, with fruits and vegetables being gathered from the fields and orchards. Summer (July to August) brings warm to hot temperatures, though the river valley provides some relief compared to the lowland regions. Winter (December to February) brings cold conditions with occasional snowfall, particularly in the higher foothill areas, though the valley floor generally remains accessible.

WhatsAppHow do you get around?
Samux is most easily accessed from Ganja, which is connected to Baku by regular bus and train services. From Ganja, Samux is approximately 30-40 kilometers north and can be reached by marshrutka or taxi in about 40-50 minutes. From Baku, the journey to Samux by bus takes approximately 5-6 hours via the M2 highway. Within the rayon, local marshrutkas and shared taxis connect Samux city to surrounding villages, though services can be infrequent. The road network along main routes is generally paved, but rural roads to smaller villages may be unpaved. A private vehicle is the most practical way to explore the broader agricultural landscape and river valley areas.

WhatsAppWhat should you eat?
Samux's cuisine reflects the agricultural traditions of the Kura River valley and the northwestern Azerbaijani foothills. The region is known for its fresh fruits and vegetables, including grapes, apricots, and pomegranates, which feature prominently in both fresh consumption and prepared dishes. Rice pilaf (plov) prepared with locally grown rice and lamb is a regional staple. The Kura River supports fishing, and fresh river fish is prepared grilled or in traditional stews. Traditional bread baked in tandoor ovens remains a daily essential throughout the rayon. Dairy products including fresh cheese, yogurt, and qurut (dried curd) are important components of the local diet. Dining in Samux is modest and very affordable, with local tea houses and small restaurants serving home-style meals for 4-10 manat.
What is the culture like?
Samux's cultural traditions are shaped by its agricultural heritage and its position in the northwestern Azerbaijani foothills. Folk music and mugham performances are integral to local celebrations, particularly weddings and seasonal festivals. The Novruz celebrations in March bring the entire community together for festive gatherings with traditional foods, music, and rituals. The fruit harvest season in late summer and autumn is a significant communal event, involving extended families and neighbors in the picking and processing of grapes, apricots, and other fruits. Traditional carpet weaving follows patterns influenced by the Ganja-Kazakh school, featuring bold geometric designs and vibrant color palettes. Local artisans also produce handwoven textiles, pottery, and traditional clothing that reflect the practical needs and aesthetic sensibilities of the river valley farming communities.
