Why visit?

Qubadlı (also spelled Kubatly) is a rayon in southwestern Azerbaijan, situated in the foothills of the Lesser Caucasus mountains along the upper reaches of the Hakari River. For nearly three decades, the region was under the control of Armenian forces following the First Nagorno-Karabakh War (1992–2020), and it was recaptured by Azerbaijan during the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. As a result, Qubadlı's infrastructure, villages, and cultural sites suffered significant damage during the occupation and the fighting, and reconstruction efforts are still in their early stages.

Despite the recent upheaval, the rayon's landscape is strikingly beautiful — green valleys, forested mountain slopes, and the winding Hakari River define the terrain. The region's economy historically centered on agriculture, viticulture, and livestock, and the Azerbaijani government has announced ambitious plans to rebuild roads, housing, and public facilities. For travelers, Qubadlı remains an off-the-beaten-path destination, but one with genuine potential for eco-tourism, hiking, and cultural exploration as reconstruction progresses.

The climate is moderate, with warm summers (June–September) and cold, snowy winters (December–February). The best time to visit is late spring through early autumn, when the mountain roads are passable and the valleys are green. Visitors should be aware that many areas are still undergoing demining and reconstruction, and travel should be coordinated with local authorities.

When is the best time to visit?

The best period to visit Qubadlı is from May through October, when daytime temperatures range from 18 °C to 30 °C and the mountain roads are accessible. Late spring brings wildflowers to the valleys, while autumn offers crisp air and harvest-season activity in the remaining vineyards. Winters are harsh, with heavy snowfall closing many roads and isolating mountain villages.

The Novruz holiday in late March brings traditional celebrations with bonfires and sweets, though travel may be difficult due to road conditions. As the region rebuilds, new cultural events and festivals are expected to emerge in the coming years.

How do you get around?

Qubadlı is connected to the rest of Azerbaijan by road, though the routes have been damaged and are being rebuilt. The main road from Baku passes through Lənkəran and Zəngilan before reaching Qubadlı — a journey of approximately 6–7 hours by car. Minibus services are limited but growing as infrastructure improves. Within the rayon, travel is primarily by car or taxi, as public transit has not yet been fully restored.

Where should you go?

  • Qubadli — the rayon's administrative center, a small town in the Hakari River valley undergoing reconstruction after the 2020 conflict.
  • Eyvazli — a village in the foothills known for its natural springs and mountain scenery, accessible via roads currently being rebuilt.
  • Muradxanli — a settlement surrounded by forested slopes, offering hiking opportunities and traditional village architecture.
  • Qayali — a quiet village in the river valley, representative of the rayon's agricultural heritage and rural charm.

What should you eat?

Qubadlı's cuisine reflects the agricultural traditions of the Lesser Caucasus foothills. Hearty mountain dishes dominate: dovga (yogurt and herb soup), gutab (stuffed flatbreads with herbs or pumpkin), and kebabs of lamb and chicken grilled over charcoal. The region's vineyards historically produced wine grapes, and qutab with fresh herbs and local dairy are staples. In the town center, a handful of small restaurants and teahouses serve traditional meals, though dining options are limited and some establishments are still reopening after the conflict. Vegetarian options are available through salads, herb dishes, and grilled vegetables. Dietary considerations: pork is not served; halal meat is standard throughout.

What is the culture like?

Qubadlı's cultural life is being rebuilt after decades of displacement. The region has a tradition of folk music, particularly ashiq ballads accompanied by the saz (long-necked lute), and carpet weaving with distinct regional patterns. The Azerbaijani government has invested in restoring cultural institutions in the town center. As reconstruction progresses, traditional festivals — including harvest celebrations and Novruz observances — are expected to resume in full. The rayon's mosques and historical buildings are being assessed for restoration.
