Overview

Qazax Rayon is a district in north-western Azerbaijan, near the Armenian and Georgian borders. The landscape is a mix of lowland plains along the Kura River and hilly terrain to the south. The district has a strong cultural identity and historical significance, with ancient monuments and a tradition of learning and literature.

The district capital, Qazax, is a small town with a central bazaar, tree-lined streets, and a relaxed atmosphere. The wider district includes traditional villages, agricultural land, and some hilly areas with scenic views. The economy is based on agriculture (grain, cotton, tobacco) and animal husbandry.

Climate is continental: hot summers (30–36 °C) and cold winters (−5 to 3 °C). Rainfall is moderate, concentrated in spring.

April through June and September through October are ideal. Summer is hot. Winter is cold with occasional snow.

Getting Around

Qazax is 420 km west of Baku (5 hours) and 30 km east of the Georgian border. Regular buses connect to Baku and Gəncė. Within the rayon, local minibuses and taxis serve the villages. Taxis within the district cost 3–8 AZN.

Cuisine

Standard Azerbaijani lowland cuisine — plov, kebabs, dolma, and fresh herbs. The bazaar sells local produce, dairy, and honey. Fresh fish from the Kura River is available seasonally. Meals cost 4–8 AZN.

Qazax has a reputation as a centre of learning and literature. Novruz is the main festival. The district has historical monuments including ancient bridges and mosques. Ashiq music and wedding traditions are the primary cultural expressions.
