Naftalan is a small city in western Azerbaijan, world-famous for its unique crude oil spa treatments. The city's name literally means "oil extracted," and for over a century, visitors have come to bathe in and apply the distinctive naphthalene-based crude oil found only here. Naftalan oil is unique — it contains medicinal compounds not found in crude oil elsewhere, and its therapeutic use dates back to the 12th century.
The city has a Soviet-era spa-town character, with sanatoriums, treatment centres, and parks arranged around the oil bath facilities. The surrounding landscape is dry steppe with scattered agricultural land. The city is compact and purpose-built around its oil therapy industry.
Climate is continental — hot summers (30–36 °C) and cool winters (0–7 °C). The best visiting months are April through October.
When is the best time to visit?
April through October is the ideal window. The oil baths are available year-round, but the surrounding parks and outdoor areas are most pleasant in warmer months. Summer can be hot. Winter is cold but the treatment centres remain open.

What is the culture like?
Naftalan's culture revolves around its oil therapy tradition. The city's museums document the history of oil bathing. Novruz is celebrated locally. The sanatoriums themselves are cultural institutions — Soviet-era spa culture preserved in modern form.
