Why visit?

İmişli Rayon is a district in south-central Azerbaijan, on the Mugan Plain between the Kura and Araz rivers. The landscape is flat and agricultural — vast fields of cotton, wheat, rice, and sunflowers stretch to the horizon. The district is one of Azerbaijan's most productive farming regions, benefiting from irrigation from the Kura River and its tributaries.

The district capital, İmişli, is a small town with a central bazaar and Soviet-era architecture. The wider district is dotted with farming villages connected by irrigation canals and unpaved roads. The Mugan Plain has a frontier quality — the Iranian border is relatively close, and the flat, open landscape gives a sense of vast space.

Climate is semi-arid continental: very hot summers (34–40 °C), mild winters (1–8 °C), and low rainfall. The flat terrain and open sky produce dramatic weather — thunderstorms in spring, dust storms in summer, and spectacular sunsets year-round.

When is the best time to visit?

Spring (March–May) is the best season, when fields are green, temperatures are pleasant (15–25 °C), and the landscape is at its most attractive. Autumn (September–October) is also comfortable. Summer is extremely hot and best avoided. Winter is cold but dry.

What should you eat?

İmişli's cuisine is based on its agricultural produce. Fresh vegetables — tomatoes, peppers, aubergines — feature prominently. Plov, dolma, and kebabs are staples. Rice dishes are prominent, as the Mugan Plain produces much of Azerbaijan's rice. The bazaar sells fresh produce, dairy, and honey. Local melons and watermelons are excellent in summer. Meals cost 4–8 AZN in local restaurants.

What is the culture like?

Novruz (around 21 March) is the main festival. Agricultural harvest celebrations mark the end of the cotton and grain seasons. The district's border proximity brings some Iranian cultural influence. Ashiq music and wedding traditions are the primary cultural expressions. Local crafts include cotton-weaving and basket-making.
