Göygöl Rayon is a district in western Azerbaijan, centred on the stunning Göygöl (Blue Lake) — one of the most beautiful natural attractions in the Caucasus. The district sits at the foot of the Lesser Caucasus mountains, with the Kapaz Mountain (3,065 m) as its dramatic backdrop. The lake, formed by an earthquake-triggered landslide in 1139, is renowned for its crystal-clear blue-green water and the pristine forest that surrounds it.
The district capital, Göygöl (formerly Xanlar), is a small town with a pleasant climate and a gateway function for visitors to the national park. The surrounding landscape is a patchwork of deciduous forest, alpine meadows, and mountain streams. The area was historically home to a significant German community (Helenendorf), whose legacy survives in winemaking traditions and some architectural remains.
Climate varies with elevation: the valley floor has hot summers (26–32 °C) and cold winters (−3 to 5 °C), while the mountains are cooler year-round. The national park area is most pleasant from June to September.
When is the best time to visit?
June through September is the best window for visiting Göygöl National Park, with warm days (18–25 °C) and clear skies. The lake is at its most photogenic in summer when the water is at its bluest. Spring (May–June) brings wildflowers to the meadows. Autumn (September–October) offers golden foliage. Winter brings snow; the park may be closed or inaccessible from December to March.

From Gəncė, taxis and minibuses reach Göygöl in 15 minutes. The national park requires a vehicle or guided tour to access; private cars can reach the park entrance. Taxis within the district cost 3–8 AZN.

WhatsAppWhat should you eat?
The district's cuisine is typical of western Azerbaijan with a mountain influence. Grilled meats, piti (lamb stew), and plov are staples. The German heritage has left a legacy of winemaking — local wines from the Gəncė-Göygöl region are among Azerbaijan's best. Fresh trout from mountain streams is served in restaurants near the park. Honey from highland apiaries is a local product. Meals cost 5–12 AZN in local restaurants.
What is the culture like?
The district's cultural identity blends Azerbaijani and German heritage. The Helenendorf German colony (now Göygöl town) was established in the 19th century; remnants include a church and wine cellars. Novruz is the main Azerbaijani festival. Wine-tasting events are growing in popularity. The national park hosts occasional nature and outdoor festivals.
