Göyçay Rayon is a district in central Azerbaijan, known throughout the country as the "pomegranate capital." The district sits on the southern slopes of the Greater Caucasus foothills, with the Göyçay River cutting through a fertile valley. Pomegranate orchards cover the hillsides, and the annual pomegranate festival in October draws visitors from across Azerbaijan.
The district capital, Göyçay, is a pleasant town with tree-lined streets, a central bazaar, and a relaxed atmosphere. The town grew up around the river crossing and became a centre of pomegranate cultivation and processing. Beyond pomegranates, the district produces grapes, nuts, and livestock. The landscape transitions from flat agricultural land in the south to forested hills in the north.
Climate is continental — hot summers (28–34 °C), cool winters (0–7 °C), and moderate rainfall concentrated in spring and autumn. The foothill location gives the district a milder climate than the lowlands to the south.
When is the best time to visit?
October is the peak month, when the Pomegranate Festival brings the district alive with celebrations, tastings, and cultural events. Spring (April–May) is also pleasant, with green orchards and comfortable temperatures. Summer (June–August) is hot but manageable. Winter is cold but rarely severe.

Pomegranate pakhlava is a distinctive local sweet. Meals in local restaurants cost 5–10 AZN.
What is the culture like?
The Pomegranate Festival (October) is the district's signature event, featuring fruit exhibitions, cooking competitions, folk music, and dance performances.
