Why visit?

Gəncə is Azerbaijan's second-largest city and one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the South Caucasus. Located in western Azerbaijan at the foot of the Lesser Caucasus mountains, Gəncə has been a centre of culture, trade, and learning for over two millennia. The city is the birthplace of the great Persian poet Nizami Ganjavi (1141–1209), whose mausoleum is one of Azerbaijan's most important cultural monuments.

Gəncə's architecture reflects its layered history — medieval mosques and bathhouses, 19th-century Russian Imperial buildings, Soviet-era apartment blocks, and modern construction coexist in a compact urban area. The city centre is dominated by the imposing Gəncə city gates (triumphal arches), wide boulevards, and the tree-shaded Nizami Park. The Ganja River (Gəncəçay) flows through the city, and the surrounding foothills provide a scenic backdrop.

The climate is continental — hot summers (28–35 °C), cold winters (−3 to 5 °c), and moderate rainfall. Gəncə is a major transport hub, connecting Baku with Georgia, Armenia (border closed), and western Azerbaijan.

When is the best time to visit?

April through June and September through October are the best months, with pleasant temperatures (15–25 °C) and green landscapes. Summer (July–August) is hot but manageable. Winter (December–February) is cold with occasional snow. Novruz (around 21 March) is celebrated enthusiastically in Gəncə. The city hosts various cultural festivals throughout the year.

What should you eat?

Gəncə's food culture is distinctive. Gəncə plov (pilaf with chestnuts and dried fruits) is the city's signature dish, different from Baku-style plov. Kebabs, dolma, and qutab are staples. The central bazaar sells fresh produce, local dairy, and traditional sweets. Restaurants range from basic canteens to mid-range establishments; a full meal costs 5–15 AZN. Gəncə is also known for its pakhlava, which differs from the Baku version in shape and filling. Tea houses are ubiquitous.

What is the culture like?

Gəncə is a cultural powerhouse. The Nizami Ganjavi Mausoleum and Museum are pilgrimage sites for lovers of Persian and Azerbaijani literature. The city's historical mosques — the Shah Abbas Mosque (moved stone-by-stone from the old city centre) and the Juma Mosque — are architectural highlights. The Gəncə State Philharmonic and various theatres offer performances. Novruz, the Gəncə City Day, and various literary festivals are major events.
