Sim
Astara, Azerbaijan
Why visit Sim?
Sim is a mountain village in Astara Rayon, set in the heart of the Talysh (Talış) Mountains of southeastern Azerbaijan, roughly 20 km inland from the coastal town of Astara and close to the Iranian border. It sits at about 478 m above sea level on the old caravan route — the village lies on the Ancient Silk Road — and is best known for the enormous megalithic "raft stones" scattered through and around it. Its name comes from the Talysh language and translates roughly as "a village sitting on a rock."
The setting is what draws visitors: tall moss-covered boulders and ancient trees stand between the houses, and the surrounding slopes are cloaked in the humid Hirkan forest that survives along this coast. Several waterfalls tumble out of the forest nearby. The village is home to the Talysh people, whose language and culture are closely tied to Persian heritage, and daily life runs on beekeeping, vegetable growing and cattle breeding rather than tourism.
The climate is humid subtropical but cooler and greener than the muggy coast below: mild, wet winters and warm summers, with the forest at its lushest from spring into autumn. Sim has no real tourist infrastructure and suits travellers exploring the Talysh uplands above Astara and Lankaran.

By Plane
The nearest major airport is Heydar Aliyev International Airport (GYD) in Baku, approximately 320 km north — around a 5–6 hour drive. Lankaran International Airport (LLK), about 60 km north, handles limited domestic and regional flights.
By Train
No railway station. The nearest railhead is at Lankaran (about 60 km north). From Lankaran, continue by road to Astara and then up into the mountains to Sim.
By Car / Road
From Baku, drive south on the M3 coastal highway through Lankaran to Astara (about 320 km). From Astara town, a mountain road climbs roughly 20 km west into the Talysh hills to reach the village. The final approach and the tracks out to the waterfalls are rough — locals run UAZ and Niva 4×4s for the last stretch, and hiring one is the usual way to reach Sim and the falls beyond it.
Walk — the village is small and best explored on foot. To reach the waterfalls and viewpoints in the surrounding forest, hire one of the local 4×4s (UAZ/Niva) with a driver, as ordinary cars cannot manage the tracks.
What are the things to do?
Sim Waterfalls — the village's signature attraction; a cascade in the forest above the settlement, with two more waterfalls nearby.

Moss-covered rocks and ancient trees — tall, moss-clad boulders and old-growth trees stand right between the houses, a hallmark of Sim's untouched look.
Hirkan forest — the relic Caspian woodland cloaking the surrounding Talysh slopes.
Caspian Sea views — on clear days the sea is visible far below from the ridgetops above the village.
The White Bridge — a spot on the river where locals serve tea and traditional desserts.
Hiking — trails lead through the forest to the waterfalls and up to the viewpoints; guided walks can be arranged locally.
Picnicking — picnic by the waterfalls or the river, the classic local outing.
Tea by the water — drink locally grown Astara tea with sweets at the White Bridge.
Buy from producers — pick up honey from village beekeepers and, in season, mandarins from the orchards along the approach road.
