Aggol National Park
Agcabedi, Azerbaijan
Why visit Aggol National Park?
Ağgöl National Park (Ağgöl Milli Parkı) is a protected wetland reserve in Ağcabədi Rayon, central Azerbaijan, approximately 30 km south of the city of Ağcabədi. Established in 2003, the park covers around 17,900 hectares of shallow lakes, marshes, reed beds, and saline flats surrounding the remnants of a large glacial-era lake. It was designated a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance in 2001, recognising its critical role for migratory waterbirds.
The park is one of Azerbaijan's most important birdwatching sites, supporting over 140 species including pelicans, herons, spoonbills, flamingos, and numerous waders and raptors. It also provides habitat for wild boar, jackals, hares, and various reptile and amphibian species. The landscape is starkly beautiful — vast expanses of shallow water reflecting big skies, fringed by dense reed beds.
The climate is semi-arid continental. Summers are very hot (32–40 °C) with little shade; winters are cold and windy (0–8 °C). The best time to visit is during spring migration (March–May) and autumn migration (September–November), when bird numbers peak. Summer visits require heat precautions and are less rewarding for birdwatching.

By Plane
The nearest airport is Heydar Aliyev International Airport (GYD) in Baku, approximately 300 km east. There is no airport near the park. A taxi from Baku costs 70–90 AZN and takes about 3.5–4 hours to reach Ağcabədi, the nearest city.
By Train
The nearest railway station is in Yevlax (70 km north) on the Baku–Tbilisi main line. From Yevlax, take a taxi or minibus to Ağcabədi (40 km), then arrange transport to the park (30 km south).
By Car / Road
From Baku, take the M2 west to Yevlax (250 km, ~3 hours), then the R15 south to Ağcabədi (40 km). From Ağcabədi, local roads lead south to the park entrance (30 km, ~30 min). Roads are paved to Ağcabədi but may be unpaved or rough near the park. A 4x4 is recommended for the final approach. From Ganja, the drive is about 120 km via Yevlax (2 hours).
There is no public transport within the park. A private vehicle or hired taxi from Ağcabədi is essential. The park has limited internal roads and tracks; a 4x4 or sturdy vehicle is advisable. Walking is the primary way to explore once inside, but terrain can be uneven and muddy near the water's edge.
What are the things to do?
Main lake and observation points — The central shallow lake is the park's core habitat. Observation points along the access tracks offer views of pelicans, herons, and flamingos, particularly during migration seasons.
Reed bed habitats — Dense stands of Phragmites reeds line the lake margins, providing nesting habitat for warblers, bitterns, and marsh harriers. Listen for their calls in spring and summer.
Saline flats — The drier areas around the lake feature salt-tolerant vegetation and are home to larks, pipits, and occasional raptors scanning for prey.
Wetland edges — The transitional zone between water and dry land attracts waders, terns, and kingfishers during migration.
Birdwatching — The park's primary attraction. Bring binoculars and a field guide. Spring (March–May) is peak season with breeding colonies and passage migrants. Autumn (September–November) brings large flocks of waterbirds heading south. Guided tours can sometimes be arranged through the park office or local birdwatching groups in Baku.
Photography — The wide-open landscapes and birdlife offer excellent photographic opportunities, especially at dawn and dusk when light is dramatic.
Nature walks — Walking along the lakeshore and through the reed beds (staying on established paths to avoid disturbing wildlife) is rewarding. Wear sturdy footwear and carry water.
Research and education — The park occasionally hosts academic groups and researchers studying wetland ecology. Contact the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources for access.
