Beechworth

Victoria, Australia

Why visit Beechworth?

Beechworth is a historic town in the High Country of northeast Victoria, celebrated as one of the best-preserved gold-rush towns in Australia. Its compact historic precinct is lined with grand granite and honey-coloured buildings from the prosperous gold era, and walking the streets feels like stepping back into the 19th century. The town is also closely tied to the story of the bushranger Ned Kelly, who was held in the local cell and committed for trial at the Beechworth Court House.

Set in the hills near the larger centres of Wangaratta and Wodonga, Beechworth today blends heritage tourism with a strong food-and-drink reputation — it sits at the gateway to the surrounding gourmet country and is famous for Beechworth Honey and a well-known local brewery. It is also a hub of the region's rail-trail cycling network.

Spring and autumn are ideal, with mild days and seasonal wildflowers; summers are warm and winters cold, occasionally with frost. The Beechworth Visitor Information Centre (103 Ford St, daily 9:30AM–4:30PM) is the best first stop.
