Merimbula

New South Wales, Australia

Why visit Merimbula?

Merimbula sits on the shores of Merimbula Lake, a tidal inlet that opens to the ocean, with its twin town of Pambula just across the water to the south. The lake and inlet, the surf and bay beaches, and the surrounding forests and farmland of the far south coast give the town its appeal. It is renowned for its oysters and its clear waters, popular for swimming, boating and diving.

As the main town of the Sapphire Coast and the site of the area's regional airport, Merimbula serves as a gateway for the whole far-south-coast district, including nearby Eden, Pambula and the inland dairy country around Bega. Its position closer to Melbourne than Sydney gives it a strong Victorian holiday following.

The climate is mild and coastal, warmest and busiest over the summer holidays; spring and autumn are pleasant and quieter, and whales pass offshore on their migrations.

How do you get there?

By Plane

Merimbula Airport (MIM IATA) is right by the town and is the main airport for the Sapphire Coast, with flights to Sydney and Melbourne. Car hire is available, making it a convenient arrival point for the far south coast.

By Car / Road

Merimbula is just off the Princes Highway (A1) in the far south:

  • From Sydney — about 460 km (roughly 6–7 hours) south via the Princes Highway.
  • From Canberra — via the Monaro and Snowy Mountains Highways through Cooma and Bega, around 3 hours.
  • From Melbourne — about 490 km (roughly 6 hours) north up the coast.

Coach services run along the Princes Highway corridor.

The compact town centre and lakefront are walkable, and a car is the best way to reach the surrounding beaches, Pambula and nearby towns. Local public transport is limited. Boats, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards are popular on the lake and inlet.
