Eden
New South Wales, Australia
Why visit Eden?
Eden grew up around Twofold Bay, one of the deepest natural harbours in the Southern Hemisphere, which made it an important whaling and shipping port through the 19th and early 20th centuries. The town's most remarkable story is that of the killer whales of Twofold Bay, which famously cooperated with local whalers to drive baleen whales into the bay — a unique chapter of natural and human history preserved at the Eden Killer Whale Museum, home to the skeleton of "Old Tom".
Today whaling has given way to whale watching: each year humpback and southern right whales pass close to shore on their migrations, and Eden celebrates them with an annual Whale Festival. The town remains a working fishing port, and its surroundings — the beaches and inlets of the Sapphire Coast and the vast forests and coastline of the nearby national parks — are its main draw.
The far south coast has a mild, sometimes wet maritime climate. The whale-watching season (roughly spring and into early summer) and the summer holidays are the busiest times; autumn and spring are pleasant and quieter.
