Bega

New South Wales, Australia

Why visit Bega?

Bega sits in a fertile river valley a little inland from the far south coast, surrounded by rolling dairy country. Its identity is bound up with that dairy heritage — the Bega brand is a household name across Australia — and the town makes a useful base and supply stop for exploring the Sapphire Coast beaches and the Snowy Mountains hinterland.

The valley has a mild, green climate, wetter and cooler than much of inland NSW; the surrounding coast is at its busiest over the summer holidays, while spring and autumn are pleasant and quieter in town. Bega itself is a modest country town rather than a tourist resort, but its position between the coast and the mountains makes it a natural waypoint.

How do you get there?

By Plane

The nearest airport with scheduled services is Merimbula Airport (MIM IATA) on the coast, a short drive east, with flights to Sydney and Melbourne. From there, hire a car or take a local service to Bega.

By Car / Road

Bega is reached mainly by car:

  • From Sydney — head south on the M1 / Princes Highway (A1) for about 6 hours.
  • From Canberra — head south on the Monaro Highway (B23), then turn onto the Snowy Mountains Highway (B72) and descend to Bega.

It sits at the junction of the Princes and Snowy Mountains Highways, making it the gateway between the Sapphire Coast and the Snowy Mountains. Coach services run along the Princes Highway corridor.

The town centre is small and walkable. A car is essential for reaching the surrounding dairy farms, coastal beaches and mountain country, as local public transport is very limited.

What are the things to do?

  • Bega Cheese Heritage Centre (13/11 Lagoon St) — A small museum on the town's cheese and dairy history, displaying rustic processing equipment with informative labels, plus a café and a cheese-tasting area where you can sample the Bega range. Note there are no factory tours showing the cheese being made.

  • Bega Pioneers' Museum — A local history museum housed in heritage buildings, recalling the valley's pioneering and dairy past.

  • Cheese tasting — Sample the local product at the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre.

  • Sapphire Coast day trips — The beaches of Tathra, Merimbula and Bermagui are all within easy reach.

  • Scenic drives — Routes climb west into the Snowy Mountains and wind down to the coast.

  • Markets and produce — The valley's dairy and farm produce feature at local markets and farm gates.
