Bowral
New South Wales, Australia
Why visit Bowral?
Bowral sits at the heart of the Southern Highlands, an elevated district between Sydney and the South Coast long favoured as a cool retreat from the city's summer heat. The town developed in the 19th century along the railway and grew into a fashionable highlands resort, a character it retains today in its tree-lined streets, grand old homes, gardens and country-town charm.
The town is famous for two things in particular: its spring gardens — celebrated each year at the Tulip Time festival, when Corbett Gardens blazes with colour — and its connection to cricketing legend Sir Donald Bradman, who grew up in Bowral and is honoured at the International Cricket Hall of Fame at the Bradman Oval. The compact CBD along Bong Bong Street is lined with cafés, boutiques, antique shops and galleries.
At around 700 m elevation, Bowral has a genuinely cool-climate four-season feel: warm but mild summers, brilliant autumn colour, cold and sometimes frosty winters, and flower-filled springs. Spring (for the gardens) and autumn are the most popular times to visit, though the highlands are an appealing escape year-round.

Ask on WhatsAppHow do you get there?
By Train
Bowral's historic railway station on Station Street is on the Southern Highlands Line, with trains to and from Campbelltown (connecting to Sydney) roughly every 40–60 minutes on weekdays and every 1–2 hours on weekends; check the timetable, as late-night services don't run. NSW TrainLink Regional also runs three services a day from Sydney's Central Station toward Canberra via Bowral (from around $16 one-way; just under 2 hours), which must be booked in advance.
By Car / Road
Bowral is reached via the Hume Motorway (M31) from Sydney heading toward Canberra and Melbourne — about 136 km (around 80 minutes) from the Sydney CBD, making it ideal for weekenders and day-trippers. It connects locally to Mittagong via the Highlands Way to the north, and to Moss Vale to the south.
Bus options include Berrima Coaches (a daily service to Wollongong and Nowra via Albion Park), Priors Scenic Express (from Parramatta, Liverpool and Campbelltown, continuing to Kangaroo Valley, Nowra and the South Coast as far as Narooma, six days a week), and a bookable Bowral–Sydney Airport shuttle service.
Bowral's compact CBD, centred on Bong Bong Street, is easily explored on foot, with the shops, cafés, Corbett Gardens and the Bradman Oval all within walking distance or a short drive. A car is useful for reaching the surrounding Southern Highlands villages, gardens and cellar doors; local and regional bus services are limited.
