Santa Coloma
Andorra la Vella, Andorra
Why visit Santa Coloma?
Santa Coloma is a small but historically important village in Andorra la Vella parish, set on the right bank of the Gran Valira river at about 990 m, ~3 km west of the city centre on the CG-1 toward Sant Julià de Lòria. It has been administratively absorbed into the capital's parish (its modern fabric flows continuously into the city's western edge), but it preserves a distinct historic core anchored by the Església de Santa Coloma, one of the oldest churches in Andorra and arguably the country's most architecturally important Romanesque building.
The church was probably founded in the 8th or 9th century, with substantial Romanesque additions in the 11th and 12th centuries. It is distinguished by its circular, free-standing Romanesque bell tower — one of only a small handful of cylindrical Romanesque towers in the Pyrenees — and by surviving medieval frescoes inside the nave (some originals having been moved to museums in Berlin and Catalonia and replaced in situ by careful reproductions, with high-quality digital projection re-creations of the lost paintings now part of the visitor experience).
Beyond the church, Santa Coloma is largely a residential and light-commercial extension of Andorra la Vella, with a mix of older stone houses near the church and modern apartment blocks along the main road.
Best time to visit: year-round given its low altitude and city proximity; April–October for the milder weather.

What are the things to do?
Església de Santa Coloma — The country's most important Romanesque church, with a free-standing circular bell tower (one of a small handful in the Pyrenees), a 12th-century carved wooden Madonna, and a cycle of medieval frescoes (in-situ reproductions of works largely moved to museums, augmented by an immersive light-and-sound projection re-creating the lost paintings). Guided visits and the projection show typically run several times daily; modest fee (around €5).
Traditional core around the church — Older stone houses and lanes, a quieter complement to the city.
Pont de Sant Antoni — Small medieval-origin stone bridge over the Gran Valira.
River walks along the Gran Valira — Easy paved paths linking Santa Coloma to the city centre and west to La Margineda.
Visit the church and the light-and-sound show — Allow 1–1.5 hr; one of Andorra's defining cultural experiences.
Walk the river paths to La Margineda and the medieval bridge — Easy 1 hr return.
Use as a quiet residential base for visiting Andorra la Vella — Cobus to the centre in 10 minutes.
