La Margineda
Andorra la Vella, Andorra
Why visit La Margineda?
La Margineda is a small settlement in Andorra la Vella parish, set on the right bank of the Gran Valira river at about 960 m, ~5 km southwest of the capital's centre on the CG-1 toward Sant Julià de Lòria. Administratively it sits in the southern stretch of the parish where Andorra la Vella meets Aixovall and Sant Julià, and it functions as a mostly residential and light-commercial extension of the capital. Its particular cultural-heritage claim is the Pont de la Margineda — one of the most elegant medieval stone-arch bridges in the Pyrenees and a national monument.
The bridge, generally dated to the 14th or 15th century, is a single-arch crossing of the Gran Valira on the old royal road between Sant Julià de Lòria and Andorra la Vella, with a span of around 9 m and a characteristic asymmetric profile rising sharply from the south bank. It has been carefully restored and is a popular short walk and photo stop.
Around the bridge are also the Roc d'Enclar archaeological site on the slopes above (a multi-period site with Iron Age, Visigothic and medieval remains, including the foundations of an early-medieval fortified settlement) and the small Romanesque-origin chapel of Sant Vicenç d'Enclar.
Best time to visit: April–October for the river walk; the bridge is accessible year-round.
