Overview

Midlands Province is the geographic heart of Zimbabwe, occupying the central Highveld between Harare and Bulawayo. The province is named for its central position and contains the country's most important transport corridor — the A5 highway and main railway line linking the two largest cities. The provincial capital is Gweru, Zimbabwe's third-largest city. The landscape is rolling grassland and farmland, punctuated by granite kopjes and the watershed that divides the Zambezi and Limpopo river systems. Midlands is rich in history, with the Danangombe and Naletale ruins among the country's most important archaeological sites after Great Zimbabwe.

When to Visit

The dry season (May–September) is ideal. The weather is mild and sunny, and roads are in the best condition. The rainy season (November–March) brings thunderstorms but also turns the landscape lushly green. Gweru's agricultural show takes place in August.

Getting Around

The A5 highway (Harare–Bulawayo) bisects the province. Gweru is 280 km from Harare (3 hours) and 160 km from Bulawayo (2 hours). Kwekwe is 70 km north of Gweru. Minibus kombis run frequently along this corridor. Secondary roads connect Gokwe in the northwest and Zvishavane in the south. Railways link Gweru and Kwekwe but passenger services remain suspended.

Culture & Festivals

The province is predominantly Shona-speaking with some Ndebele influence in the west. The Gweru Agricultural Show in August is a major event. Danangombe and Naletale — stone ruins from the later Zimbabwe period — are significant cultural heritage sites.
