Overview

Masvingo Province is in south-eastern Zimbabwe, stretching from the central Highveld to the Lowveld border with Mozambique. The provincial capital is Masvingo, the country's oldest colonial settlement (founded 1890). The province contains Great Zimbabwe, the largest ancient stone ruins in sub-Saharan Africa and a Unesco World Heritage Site, after which the country is named. The landscape transitions from granite hills around Masvingo to the dry, hot Lowveld of the Save-Runde river system, culminating in the remote Gonarezhou National Park. It is a province of immense historical significance and wild, untamed beauty.

When to Visit

The dry winter months (May–September) are best — mild days, cool nights, and optimal game viewing in Gonarezhou. The rainy season (November–March) makes Gonarezhou's clay roads impassable and the park may close. Great Zimbabwe can be visited year-round. The Masvingo Agricultural Show is held in September.

Getting Around

The A4 highway connects Masvingo to Harare (290 km, 3.5 hours). The A9 connects Masvingo to Beitbridge (300 km, 4 hours). A tarred road leads to Great Zimbabwe (30 km east of Masvingo). The road to Gonarezhou National Park via Chiredzi is tarred but the park interior requires a 4WD. Minibus kombis serve the main routes.

Cuisine

The Lowveld areas around Triangle and Chiredzi are Zimbabwe's sugar belt, producing most of the country's sugar. Local dishes reflect Shona traditions: sadza, beef, goat, and freshwater fish from Lake Mutirikwi. The sugar estates produce sugar, molasses, and locally distilled spirits.

Culture & Festivals

The province is the heartland of the Shona people and the site of Great Zimbabwe — the spiritual and historical anchor of Zimbabwean identity. The Masvingo Agricultural Show is the largest annual event. The Chivi area is known for its craft markets, especially wood carving and basket weaving.
