Chau Thanh
Tiền Giang, Viet Nam
Why visit Chau Thanh?
Châu Thành is a riverine district in central Tiền Giang Province, situated directly opposite the Tiền River from the provincial capital Mỹ Tho. The district is best known for encompassing the famous Tứ Linh (Four Mythical Creatures) islands — Dragon, Unicorn, Tortoise, and Phoenix — that sit in the Tiền River and form the heart of Tiền Giang's orchard-tourism industry. These islands, accessible by sampan from Mỹ Tho's waterfront, are where most Mekong Delta boat tours from Ho Chi Minh City make their first stop.
The district's economy is split between agriculture on the mainland (rice, fruit, and vegetables) and tourism on the islands, where coconut candy workshops, fruit orchards, honey-bee farms, and traditional music performances cater to the steady flow of visitors. The island communities maintain a semi-rural character despite the tourism, with narrow lanes shaded by coconut palms and water coconut trees lining the canals.
The climate is tropical monsoon. The dry season (December–April) is the peak tourist period with reliable weather for boat excursions. The wet season (May–November) brings afternoon downpours that can make the narrow canals difficult to navigate but also means lusher vegetation and fewer crowds.

By Plane
The nearest airport is Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN) in Ho Chi Minh City, approximately 75 km north. From the airport, take a taxi or bus to Mỹ Tho, then arrange a boat crossing to the islands.
By Car / Road
Châu Thành's mainland areas are accessible via Provincial Road 864 from Mỹ Tho, crossing the Rạch Miễu Bridge. The islands are reached only by boat from Mỹ Tho's waterfront. Regular bus services from Mỹ Tho's bus station serve the mainland part of the district.
The Tứ Linh islands are best explored by bicycle or on foot along the narrow paths between orchards and workshops. Most visitors arrive as part of organized boat tours from Mỹ Tho that include sampan rides through the canal network. On the mainland, motorbike taxis are the primary local transport.
What are the things to do?
Tứ Linh Islands — The four islands (Cồn Rồng (Dragon), Cồn Quy (Unicorn), Cồn Phụng (Phoenix), and Cồn Rùa (Tortoise)) are covered in fruit orchards and coconut groves. The narrow canals running through them are the classic image of the Mekong Delta.
Coconut candy workshops — Family-run operations on the islands where coconut milk is caramelized, spread, cut, and wrapped by hand. Visitors can watch the process and sample fresh candy.
Fruit orchards — Rambutan, mangosteen, durian, longan, and pomelo are grown on the islands. During harvest (May–August), many orchards offer fruit-tasting experiences.
Bee farms — Small apiaries where local honey is harvested from flowers on the islands. Visitors can taste honey tea and see the hives up close.
Sampan ride through palm-fringed canals — The signature experience: paddle in a small wooden boat along narrow waterways overhung with coconut palms and water coconut trees, with only the sounds of birds and paddles.
Traditional music performance — Many tour stops include a performance of đờn ca tài tử (southern Vietnamese folk music), a UNESCO-recognized art form, in a rustic pavilion.
Cycling the islands — Rent a bicycle and ride the quiet paths between fruit orchards, crossing small bridges over the canals.
Fruit tasting — Stop at an orchard to sample the seasonal bounty, from sweet rambutan to creamy durian.

Where to drink?
Honey tea with lime and coconut water are the island specialties. Vietnamese coffee and fresh juices are available at tour stops. Bottled water is provided on most tours.

- Mid-range: Small homestays on the islands may offer basic overnight rooms; ask at the workshops or orchards.
What should you buy?
Coconut candy (kẹo dừa) made fresh on the islands is the definitive souvenir. Dried fruit, honey, and rice paper rounds are also popular purchases. Prices are slightly higher than in Mỹ Tho given the captive tourist market, but bargaining is possible.
