Why visit Cam Thuy?

Cẩm Thủy is a rural mountain district in western Thanh Hóa Province, situated along the Ma River (Sông Mã) roughly 40 km northwest of Thanh Hóa City and 145 km south of Hanoi. The district covers 425 square km of karst limestone hills, alluvial river valleys, and agricultural land. The administrative center is Phong Sơn township (formerly Cẩm Thủy town), which sits at the junction of Highway QL217 and Highway QL45.

The district is inhabited by a mix of Mường ethnic minority communities and ethnic Kinh people. Agriculture forms the core of the local economy, dominated by rice paddies, sugarcane fields, and sweet potato farming. Cẩm Thủy is known across northern Vietnam for its sacred fish streams (suối cá thần), where large schools of river fish live inside limestone cave systems protected by long-standing Mường folk beliefs.

The climate is tropical monsoonal with four distinct seasons. Summer (May to August) is hot and humid with temperatures between 28 °C and 36 °C. Heavy rains occur from August through October when typhoon activity can cause the Ma River to swell. Winter (November to February) brings cool, dry conditions with temperatures ranging between 14 °C and 22 °C.
