Why visit Ly Son?
Lý Sơn (formerly known as Cù Lao Ré) is a volcanic island district off the coast of Quảng Ngãi province, covering approximately 10 km² with a population of 22,174. The island consists of two main volcanic islands and several islets in the South China Sea, with the largest crater being Mount Thoi Loi. Known throughout Vietnam as the "Garlic Capital," Lý Sơn produces a famous specialty garlic variety. The island has evidence of Sa Huỳnh culture settlement from before 200 CE, and was used by the Cham people as a transhipment base. During the 17th century the Nguyễn lords established a colony here as part of the Hoàng Sa Company's development.
The island has a tropical monsoon climate with average temperatures around 27°C year-round. The rainy season runs from September to December, with the heaviest rainfall in October and November. The dry season (January–August) is the best time to visit.
