Than Uyen
Lai Châu, Viet Nam
Why visit Than Uyen?
Than Uyên is a commune in the southeastern part of Lai Châu province, in the district of the same name. It lies in the valley of the Nậm Mu River, a tributary of the Đà River, at an elevation of approximately 300–400 m. The area is less mountainous than the western districts of Lai Châu, with broader valley floors and gentler hills that support rice cultivation and tea plantations.
The district of Than Uyên was historically part of the neighbouring Phong Thổ district before being established as a separate administrative unit. The commune of Than Uyên serves as the district capital, a modest town with a market, bus station, and government offices. The population is a mix of Kinh, Thai, and H'Mông residents, with the Thai communities concentrated in the valleys and the H'Mông on the higher slopes.
For travellers, Than Uyên is primarily a transit point on the road between Lai Châu city and the neighbouring province of Yên Bái. The landscape is pleasant but less dramatically scenic than the highland districts to the west. It is a place to experience everyday rural life in the northwest without the tourist infrastructure — or the tourist attention — of better-known destinations.

By Plane
The nearest airport is Noi Bai International Airport (HAN) in Hanoi (approximately 250 km southeast).
By Car / Road
Than Uyên lies on National Highway 32, which connects Lai Châu city (80 km northwest) to Yên Bái city (120 km southeast) and onward to Hanoi. Buses between Lai Châu city and Yên Bái pass through the township. The road is paved and generally in good condition — one of the better-maintained routes in the province. From Lai Châu city, the drive takes about 2 hours by car or motorbike.
The township is small and walkable. To explore the surrounding district, a motorbike is recommended. The valley roads are mostly paved and in reasonable condition. Local minibuses serve the larger communes but are infrequent.
What are the things to do?
Nậm Mu River valley: The broad valley around Than Uyên township is lined with rice fields and vegetable plots. The river itself is a modest stream in the dry season but swells significantly during the monsoon.
Thai villages: Several Black Thai hamlets along the valley road retain traditional stilt houses and weaving practices. The village of Mường Kim, a few kilometres south of the township, is a good example.
Tea plantations: The hillsides around Than Uyên support a modest tea-growing industry. The plantations are not large-scale but offer a pleasant landscape and an opportunity to see a side of northwest Vietnamese agriculture beyond rice.
Local market: The daily market in Than Uyên township sells fresh produce, meat, and basic household goods. A more lively exchange occurs on Sunday mornings when villagers from surrounding communes come to trade.
Valley cycling: The relatively flat roads of the Nậm Mu valley are suitable for cycling, a rarity in mountainous Lai Châu. Bring your own bicycle or rent a motorbike and go at a slow pace.
Village walks: Walk or cycle to nearby Thai and H'Mông villages. The paths connecting the hamlets are not marked on any map — ask locally and be prepared for a bit of exploration.
Tea tasting: If you encounter a tea-processing household, ask to try the local green tea. It is typically roasted in a wok over a wood fire and has a distinctive smoky character.

- Market phở stalls: Several stalls in the market serve phở bò (beef pho) and bún riêu (crab noodle soup) for 20,000–35,000 VND.

- Homestay meals: If staying with a Thai family, expect the standard Black Thai repertoire — sticky rice, grilled fish, and sour soup.
Where to drink?
Green tea is ubiquitous. The local rượu ngô (corn wine) is less celebrated than the highland versions from Sìn Hồ or Phong Thổ but is perfectly drinkable. Bottled water is available in the township.

What should you buy?
The daily market in Than Uyên township is functional rather than touristic. For handicrafts, the Sunday market in Than Uyên draws slightly more variety, but travellers with an interest in textiles should head to Sìn Hồ or Lai Châu city. Prices at the market are low — a breakfast bowl of phở costs about 25,000 VND.
