Kien Luong

Kien Luong (Kiên Lương) is a rural district of Kiến Giang province in the Mekong Delta region of southern Vietnam. It covers an area of 906 km² with a population of around 112,000 (2019). The district capital is the township of Kien Luong. The area is known for its limestone karst landscapes, coastal scenery, and the Ba Lua archipelago (Quần đảo Bà Lụa), a cluster of small islands off the coast that are increasingly popular for boat trips and snorkelling.

The climate follows the tropical monsoon pattern, with a dry season from November to April and a wet season from May to October. The district includes several communes: Binh An, Binh Tri, Duong Hoa, Hoa Dien, Kien Binh, Hon Nghe, and Son Hai.

The nearest airport is Rach Gia Airport (VKG IATA), approximately 70 km away. From Rach Gia, buses and taxis connect to Kien Luong town.

Kien Luong lies on National Highway 80, about 70 km from Rach Gia and 30 km from Ha Tien. Buses between Rach Gia and Ha Tien pass through the district. Local buses connect the district centre to surrounding communes.

Motorbike taxis and local buses are the main means of transport within the district. The area is relatively flat and suitable for cycling in and around the town centre. Boats can be hired at the coast to visit the Ba Lua archipelago.

• Ba Lua Archipelago — A scenic group of small islands off the Kien Luong coast, featuring limestone outcrops, sandy coves, and clear waters ideal for boat excursions.
• Hon Nghe Island — One of the larger islands in the district, accessible by boat, with fishing villages and opportunities for seafood dining.
• Kien Luong Cement Factory — A major local landmark and industrial site visible from the main road.
• Limestone Karst Scenery — The landscape around Kien Luong features distinctive karst hills, similar to those found in Ha Long Bay but on a smaller scale.

Take a boat tour of the Ba Lua archipelago for swimming and snorkelling. Visit the coastal fishing villages to observe daily life. Explore the limestone karst hills on foot or by bicycle.

Seafood is the highlight, with fresh catches available at local restaurants near the coast. Vietnamese staples such as pho, com tam (broken rice), and banh mi are available in Kien Luong township.

Vietnamese iced coffee and fresh coconut water are widely available. Bottled water is recommended.

• Budget: Small guesthouses (nha nghi) are available in Kien Luong township, typically from 150,000–250,000 dong per night.
• Mid-range: A few basic hotels cater to business travellers visiting the industrial area.

Local seafood is available at markets in the district centre. The area is known for its cement production, but souvenirs are limited — visitors should stock up on essentials in Rach Gia or Ha Tien.

• Rach Gia — 70 km east, the capital of Kiến Giang province, with flights and ferries to Phu Quoc.
• Phu Quoc — Reachable via Rach Gia or Ha Tien ferry ports, with world-class beaches and resorts.
• Chau Thanh — District to the east, with Minh Luong as its market town.
