Ky Anh

Hà Tĩnh, Viet Nam

Why visit Ky Anh?

Ky Anh is a coastal town in southern Hà Tĩnh Province, located about 60 km south of Ha Tinh city. The town has undergone dramatic transformation in recent decades — from a quiet fishing and agricultural district to an industrial hub, driven by the development of the Vũng Áng Economic Zone. This deep-water port and heavy industrial complex, anchored by the Formosa Ha Tinh Steel Corporation (a US$10 billion steel plant), has reshaped the local economy and landscape. The area is also home to thermal power stations and other heavy industry, making Ky Anh the province's most dynamic economic centre.

Despite its industrial growth, Ky Anh retains its coastal character. The town sits along the South China Sea coast, with long sandy beaches, fishing villages, and a working port. The population has grown significantly with migrant workers drawn to the industrial zone. The climate is tropical monsoon, with hot humid summers and mild winters. The best time to visit is March–August for beach weather.

Ky Anh is administratively divided — Ky Anh town (thị xã Kỳ Anh) is the urban centre, while Ky Anh district (huyện Kỳ Anh) covers the surrounding rural and coastal communes.

What are the things to do?

  • Vũng Áng Port and Economic Zone — A modern deep-water port and industrial complex. Not a tourist attraction per se, but a striking example of Vietnam's industrial ambition. The port area offers views of large cargo ships and the steel plant.

  • Ky Anh Beaches — Several stretches of undeveloped beach line the coast south of Ky Anh town. They are clean, quiet, and mostly untouristed. Good for swimming and picnicking.

  • Chùa Hoàng Sơn — A Buddhist pagoda on hill overlooking the town with views of the coast and industrial zone.

  • Ky Xuan fishing village — A traditional fishing community south of town where you can see daily fishing activities and buy fresh seafood directly from boats.

  • Đền thờ Trần Phú — A memorial temple dedicated to Trần Phú, the first General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, who was born in this area.

  • Swim and relax on the quiet beaches south of Ky Anh town — much less crowded than better-known Vietnamese beach destinations.
