Son Tay
Hà Nội, Viet Nam
Why visit Son Tay?
Sơn Tây is a ward in the western part of Hanoi, approximately 40 km from the city centre. Historically a district-level town, Sơn Tây was merged into a new ward in June 2025 under administrative reforms. The area is best known for the Citadel of Sơn Tây (Thành cổ Sơn Tây), a 19th-century star-shaped fortress built by the Nguyễn Dynasty that later gained notoriety during the 1970 Sơn Tây Raid — a US special forces operation to rescue American POWs from a nearby camp. The Sơn Tây area also encompasses the ancient village of Đường Lâm, one of Vietnam's most well-preserved traditional villages.
The climate mirrors Hanoi's: hot humid summers (May–Aug), pleasant autumns (Sep–Nov), cool winters (Dec–Feb), and warm springs (Mar–Apr). Sơn Tây's rural outskirts offer a welcome escape from Hanoi's dense urban core. The town centre is around the former Phú Thịnh and Ngô Quyền wards, with Đường Lâm village lying just to the west.

Ask on WhatsAppHow do you get there?
By Plane
Nội Bài International Airport (HAN IATA) is about 50 km east of Sơn Tây, a 45–60 minute drive by taxi costing 350,000–450,000 dong. Alternatively, take bus 07 or bus 86 from the airport into central Hanoi, then switch to a local bus heading west.
By Train
Sơn Tây does not have a railway station. Trains to Hanoi Railway Station (30–40 min away) are the closest option, from where local buses head northwest to Sơn Tây.
By Car / Road
Sơn Tây is easily reached from central Hanoi via National Highway 32 west, about a 45–60 minute drive (40 km). Local bus 71 from Hanoi's Mỹ Đình bus station runs to Sơn Tây regularly (about 20,000 dong, 1 hour). Local buses also connect to surrounding districts.
Sơn Tây is compact enough to explore by foot within the town centre. Taxis are available from the Phú Thịnh area; Grab operates in the district. Motorbike taxis (xe ôm) are common. For Đường Lâm village and outlying sights, renting a motorbike in town is the most practical option.
What are the things to do?
