Machiques

Machiques (officially Machiques de Perijá) is a market town and municipal seat in Zulia State, western Venezuela. Situated at the foot of the Sierra de Perijá mountain range near the border with Colombia, it serves as the commercial hub for Venezuela's major dairy-farming and cattle-ranching territory. The surrounding agricultural plains yield cheese and beef, while the municipality extends westward into indigenous Yukpa and Barí reserves.

Travelers use Machiques primarily as a base for trips into Sierra de Perijá National Park, visiting Capuchin mission settlements like Tokuko, or stopping over en route between Maracaibo and southern Zulia. The town grid revolves around Plaza Bolívar, anchored by the 125-year-old Catedral Nuestra Señora del Carmen, surrounded by farm-supply stores, bakeries, and local open-air markets.

Weather in Machiques is tropical, hot, and humid year-round, with daily temperatures averaging 24 °C to 34 °C (75 °F to 93 °F). Humidity remains high throughout the year due to air masses moving off Lake Maracaibo and pressing against the Perijá mountains.

By Bus

Intercity buses and por puesto shared passenger cars depart regularly from the Terminal de Pasajeros de Maracaibo to the Terminal de Pasajeros de Machiques. Regional transport companies such as U.L.A.P. (Unión de Líneas Autos Perijá) and Expressos Machiques run departures every 30 to 60 minutes throughout the day. The journey takes 2.5 to 3 hours along Trunk Route 6. Fares cost between 200 VES and 400 VES (~$5 to $10 USD), payable in cash (Bolívares or US Dollars).

By Train

No train service operates in Zulia State or Machiques. Venezuela's passenger railway network does not reach this region.

By Car

Machiques connects to Maracaibo via Trunk Route 6 (Troncal 6 / Carretera Machiques-Maracaibo), heading southwest for 130 kilometres. The drive takes between 1.5 and 2 hours depending on road conditions and military checkpoints. Drivers should fill up fuel tanks in advance due to intermittent local fuel supplies, carry cash for tolls, and avoid night driving due to unlit stretches and livestock on the road.

By Air

No commercial air service operates at Machiques Airstrip. The nearest commercial airport is La Chinita International Airport (IATA: MAR) in Maracaibo, 130 kilometres northeast. Domestic airlines including Laser Airlines, Avior Airlines, Rutaca, and Conviasa operate daily 1-hour flights to MAR from Caracas (Simón Bolívar International Airport, CCS). Private taxis from La Chinita International Airport to Machiques cost $40 to $70 USD (2 hours).

Local transport within Machiques consists of por puestos (shared cars running fixed routes), microbuses (busetas), and motorcycle taxis (moto-taxis). Fares within the central area along Avenida Santa Teresa cost 20 VES to 80 VES (~$0.50 to $2 USD). Cash in local currency (VES) or small US dollar bills is required. Mobile ride-hailing apps like Yummy or Ridery do not operate in Machiques. Reaching rural destinations such as river spots or mountain foothill trails requires hiring a private driver or renting a 4WD vehicle in Maracaibo.
