Maiquetia

La Guaira, Venezuela

Why visit Maiquetia?

Maiquetía is a coastal port city in La Guaira state on Venezuela's central Caribbean coast, situated on a narrow coastal shelf at the foot of the Cordillera de la Costa mountains. Located approximately 28 km northwest of Caracas, the city functions as the primary aviation and transport hub for the entire country due to Simón Bolívar International Airport.

Founded on January 20, 1670, Maiquetía developed as a commercial and transit community along the maritime approach to Caracas. The city forms an urban corridor with the neighboring provincial capital of La Guaira to the east and the coastal residential districts of Catia La Mar to the west. Commercial activity concentrates along Avenida Carlos Soublette and Calle Los Baños, where markets, logistics services, and transit businesses cater to travelers and freight moving between the port, the airport, and the capital.

The city has a tropical semi-arid to savanna climate with hot, humid conditions throughout the year. Daytime high temperatures consistently reach 30–33 °C (86–91 °F), while night lows range between 22–26 °C (72–79 °F). Coastal breezes provide some relief, though relative humidity remains high at 80–84%.

By Car / Road

Maiquetía connects directly to Caracas via the Autopista Caracas-La Guaira (Troncal 5 / Highway 1). The four-lane highway covers 28 km, descending from the Caracas valley through the Boquerón tunnels down to the coast. The drive takes 30–45 minutes under normal conditions, though weekday rush hours and severe weather can extend transit times to over an hour.

Avenida Carlos Soublette (Troncal 9) runs along the shoreline, connecting Maiquetía to Catia La Mar (5 km west) and the historic port area of La Guaira (3 km east). Highway toll plazas operate on the route and accept cash in Venezuelan bolívares (VES) as well as electronic toll tags (Cobremex / VenVías).
