Glen Canyon National Recreation Area
Utah, United States
Why visit Glen Canyon National Recreation Area?
Glen Canyon National Recreation Area is a vast national recreation area in Utah's Canyon Country. It encompasses the colorful canyon country surrounding Lake Powell, one of the largest man-made lakes in North America. The crystal blue lake is strikingly out of place against the deep red slickrock desert, creating a landscape that looks like it belongs on another planet. The lake was formed by the Glen Canyon Dam on the Colorado River, completed in 1963.
Lake Powell stretches for nearly 2,000 miles of shoreline and offers exceptional opportunities for boating, fishing, and water sports. The desert surrounding the lake is mostly uninhabited except for grazing longhorn steer, jackrabbits, and lizards. The area is popular with houseboat owners who sail around the lake's many side canyons and secluded beaches.
The recreation area has a severe desert climate with very hot summers and mild winters. Summer temperatures frequently exceed 100°F (38°C). Spring and fall offer more moderate temperatures, making them ideal for outdoor activities. Flash floods are a sporadic but ever-present danger, particularly in slot canyons and washes. Always check weather conditions before entering any canyon.
