Why visit Memphis?

Memphis is the second-largest city in Tennessee, with a population of more than 651,000 (2019), and the seat of Shelby County. Situated on the Mississippi River in the far southwestern corner of the state, Memphis is considered by many to be the home of blues music and the birthplace of rock 'n' roll. The city's most famous resident was Elvis Presley, whose Graceland mansion is one of the most-visited private homes in the world. Sun Studio, at 706 Union Avenue, is where Elvis, B.B. King, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison, and Jerry Lee Lewis all recorded, making it arguably the most historically significant room in American popular music.

After decades of downtown abandonment, Memphis has experienced a notable urban renaissance, boasting one of the largest downtown populations among US cities. The revitalised riverfront, Beale Street entertainment district, and the National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel (where Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in 1968) anchor a city of singular cultural significance. Memphis's culinary identity is defined by world-class barbecue — pork-centric, often dry-rubbed, and smoked low and slow over hickory.

Memphis has a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers (highs routinely above 90°F / 32°C, occasionally exceeding 100°F / 38°C) and mild winters (highs in the 40s–50s°F / 5–15°C). The best times to visit are spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November). Summer brings the Beale Street Music Festival in early May, and the city's musical calendar runs year-round.
