About Aberdeen
Aberdeen is a city in northeastern South Dakota and the county seat of Brown County, with a population of about 28,000. Founded in 1880 by the Chicago and North Western Railway, the city grew as a regional agricultural hub serving the surrounding wheat and cattle country. Aberdeen is home to Northern State University and Aberdeen Christian School, giving it a small-college-town character.
The city is known for its well-preserved downtown, the Aberdeen Community Theatre, and the Dacotah Prairie Museum, which traces the region's history from Native American habitation through settlement and modern times. Aberdeen sits on the James River and experiences a continental climate with warm summers (highs in the 80s°F) and brutally cold winters (lows well below 0°F). The best time to visit is June through September.
