South Dakota lies in the northern Great Plains of the United States, bounded by North Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, Wyoming, and Montana. The Missouri River flows south through the center, dividing the state into two distinct geographic zones: flat agricultural prairies and cornfields to the east, and arid, eroded badlands and pine-forested mountains to the west. With a population under 920,000 spread across 77,116 square miles (199,730 sq km), it is the fifth least densely populated state in the country.
Travelers visit South Dakota primarily for its expansive outdoor landscapes and monumental landmarks in the Black Hills region. The state contains Badlands National Park, Wind Cave National Park, Custer State Park, Mount Rushmore National Memorial, and the Crazy Horse Memorial. Sioux Falls anchors the eastern region as the largest commercial center, while Rapid City serves as the main entry point to western wilderness areas, historic Gold Rush towns like Deadwood, and sacred Native American lands of the Lakota, Dakota, and Nakota nations.
The climate is continental, marked by four seasons with significant temperature swings between eastern and western regions. Summers are warm to hot, while winters bring cold temperatures, sweeping winds, and heavy snowfall to higher elevations. Precipitation averages 25 inches (635 mm) annually in the southeast but drops below 15 inches (380 mm) in the western plains.
When is the best time to visit?
- June to August (Summer): High travel season across the state. Daytime temperatures average 75°F to 90°F (24°C to 32°C), though afternoon heat in the Badlands frequently exceeds 100°F (38°C). All park roads, scenic drives, visitor centers, and outdoor programs operate on full schedules. Early August brings over 500,000 visitors to the western region for the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, resulting in high lodging rates and heavy traffic.
- September to October (Autumn): Favorable months for road trips and hiking. Temperatures range from 55°F to 75°F (13°C to 24°C) in September, falling to 40°F to 60°F (4°C to 16°C) by late October. Foliage turns gold along Spearfish Canyon and Custer State Park in late September. Crowds drop significantly after Labor Day, and the annual Custer State Park Buffalo Roundup occurs in late September.
- November to March (Winter): Sub-zero cold and snowfall are common. Daytime highs average 25°F to 38°F (-4°C to 3°C), with night lows often dropping below 10°F (-12°C). High-elevation routes like Needles Highway (SD-87) close for winter. Skiing and snowshoeing operate around Terry Peak near Lead, while ice fishing opens on Missouri River reservoirs.
- April to May (Spring): Transitional weather with lingering snowstorms in April and rising temperatures reaching 60°F to 70°F (16°C to 21°C) in May. Prairie wildflowers emerge, wildlife gives birth to calves in Custer State Park, and rainfall peaks in late May.
