About Aiken
Aiken is a small city in South Carolina known for its equestrian heritage and charming downtown. Located in the Thoroughbred Country region, the city has long been a winter training ground for thoroughbred horses, with a tradition dating back to the late 19th century when wealthy northerners established winter colonies here. The city's broad avenues and parks were designed to accommodate horseback riding, and that equestrian character remains central to Aiken's identity today.
The climate in Aiken is mild, with warm summers and gentle winters that made it attractive as a winter resort for over a century. Spring and fall are the most pleasant seasons for visiting. The downtown area features a mix of historic architecture, independent shops, and restaurants, while the surrounding area includes plantations, gardens, and the Savannah River Site, a former nuclear materials production facility now operating as a research campus.
Aiken's historic district is walkable and lined with live oaks and horse statues. The Aiken Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame and Museum celebrates the city's racing heritage, and the annual Aiken Steeplechase brings horse racing fans from across the region. The city offers a relaxed pace of life and serves as a gateway to the Central Savannah River Area and nearby Augusta, Georgia.
