Why visit East Greenwich?

East Greenwich is a historic town centrally located on the western shore of Narragansett Bay in Kent County, Rhode Island. Established in the 1600s, it is the eighth oldest town in Rhode Island, with a rich colonial heritage. The original inhabitants were the Pequot Indians, and in 1644 the land was acquired by King Charles II. The town was legally established by the General Assembly in 1677 and named after Greenwich in Kent, England.

East Greenwich is renowned for its well-preserved historic district along Main Street, featuring 18th and 19th-century architecture, charming shops, and excellent restaurants. The town has a distinctly upscale yet welcoming character, drawing visitors who appreciate its blend of history, coastal beauty, and small-town New England charm. The first United States Navy was commissioned here in 1775, and the Declaration of Independence was read to the town's residents from the Kent County Courthouse in 1776.

The best time to visit is late spring through early fall, when Main Street comes alive with outdoor dining, art walks, and community events. Fall foliage adds stunning color to the surrounding landscapes. Winters are quiet but the historic charm remains year-round.
