Why visit Kill Devil Hills?

Kill Devil Hills is a colorfully named town on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, in Dare County. Best known as the site of the Wright Brothers' historic first powered flights in 1903, this coastal community draws visitors with its wide beaches, rich aviation history, and laid-back beach-town atmosphere. Though many associate the first flights with nearby Kitty Hawk, they actually took place here on the sand dunes of Kill Devil Hills.

The town has a year-round population of roughly 7,000 and is one of the larger communities on the Outer Banks. It stretches along both the Croatan Highway (US-158, the "Bypass") and Virginia Dare Trail (the "Beach Road"), with the Atlantic Ocean to the east and the sound to the west. The terrain is flat barrier island, dominated by sand dunes, maritime forest, and coastal vegetation.

Summers are warm and humid (highs around 85°F / 29°C), with the beach as the main attraction. Winters are mild (highs around 50°F / 10°C), and the quieter off-season is ideal for exploring without the crowds. Hurricane season runs June through November. The best time to visit is late spring (May–June) or early fall (September–October), when temperatures are comfortable and the peak-season crowds thin out.

How do you get there?

By Plane

First Flight Airport (FFA, IATA), located just southwest of the Wright Memorial, is a small airport for private pilots. The 3,000-foot (910 m) runway is open for day use, with tie-downs but no fuel or services. For commercial flights, Norfolk International Airport (ORF) is approximately 80 miles north (1.5-hour drive), and Raleigh–Durham International (RDU) is approximately 180 miles west (3.5-hour drive).

By Car / Road

Kill Devil Hills is accessible via US-158 (the Bypass) and Virginia Dare Trail (the Beach Road), both running north–south along the Outer Banks. From the north, take I-64 in Virginia to exit 291B (SR 168), merge onto SR 168, which becomes US-158 after crossing into North Carolina. The Wright Memorial Bridge provides northern access to the Outer Banks. From the west, take US-64 through Elizabeth City or the US-17 corridor. The drive from Norfolk is approximately 80 miles (1.5 hours).

Kill Devil Hills is a spread-out beach community best explored by car. Two main roads run north–south: the Bypass (US-158) and the Beach Road (Virginia Dare Trail). There is no public transit. Ride-hailing services like Uber and Lyft have limited availability. Bicycles are useful for short trips within the community, and many rental properties provide them.
