Buffalo

New York, United States

Why visit Buffalo?

Buffalo is the largest city in New York State's Niagara Frontier, a city full of surprises. Though sometimes the butt of jokes about chicken wings and its long-suffering sports teams, those in the know tell a different story: one of vibrant nightlife, world-class museums and cultural attractions, tight-knit neighborhoods with strong community spirit, and the sunniest summers in the northeastern United States. With a population of 278,000 in the city proper and 1.1 million in the metropolitan area, Buffalo is New York State's second-largest city and the cultural and economic center of Western New York.

Buffalo's history begins around 1789, when a trading post was established at the mouth of the Buffalo River. The city's explosive growth came when Buffalo Harbor was designated as the western end of the Erie Canal in the 1820s, making it a crucial transshipment port. Buffalo became the second-most important railroad center in the U.S. and was home to the world's first grain elevator (1843). The Pan-American Exposition of 1901 earned Buffalo the enduring nickname "City of Light" — though it is also remembered as the site where President William McKinley was fatally shot. After decades of industrial decline, Buffalo has experienced a remarkable renaissance in the 21st century, driven by high-tech industries, arts, and a revitalized downtown.

Buffalo has four very pronounced seasons. Winters are famous for lake-effect snow from Lake Erie, though this usually ends by January. Summers are the sunniest in the Northeast, with warm, pleasant days. The best times to visit are late spring through early fall (May–October), when festivals, outdoor dining, and the waterfront are at their best. The city is divided into distinct districts: Downtown (theater district and Chippewa Street clubs), Allentown and the Delaware District (hipster bars and Gilded Age mansions), Elmwood Village (boutiques and museum district), North Buffalo (Little Italy along Hertel Avenue), the West Side (diverse immigrant communities), South Buffalo (Irish heritage and the Cobblestone District), and the East Side (ornate churches and the Buffalo Museum of Science).
