About Alamogordo
Alamogordo is a small city in southeastern New Mexico, county seat of Otero County, with a population of about 31,000. The name derives from a Spanish phrase meaning "fat cottonwood," and the town began as a railroad hamlet for ranchers and farmers. Today it is best known for two things: its proximity to White Sands National Park (8 miles east) and its role as the closest substantial settlement to the first nuclear bomb test at the Trinity Site in 1945.
The town supports two major military installations — Holloman Air Force Base and the White Sands Missile Range — which have shaped its character as a community tied to military and secretive activities. Alamogordo also gained quirky infamy among video game enthusiasts as the site of the 1983 Atari video game burial, where thousands of unsold cartridges, most notably copies of the poorly-received E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, were buried in a landfill.
The climate is semi-arid desert with hot summers (frequently above 95°F/35°C) and mild winters (highs in the 50s–60s°F). Summer monsoon thunderstorms bring brief but intense rain. The Tularosa Basin location means very little humidity and abundant sunshine year-round — over 300 sunny days annually. Spring can be windy, with occasional dust storms.
