Sidney is a city of approximately 6,700 people in the Nebraska Panhandle, located in Cheyenne County. Founded during the railroad era, Sidney served as a significant military outpost with Fort Sidney, established in 1867 to protect workers building the transcontinental railroad. The city has a rich Old West heritage, with its original Boot Hill Cemetery dating from 1868.

Sidney sits at the crossroads of US-385 and I-80, making it a convenient stop for travelers crossing western Nebraska. The city features several historic Fort Sidney sites, a charming downtown area, and easy access to outdoor recreation in the surrounding Panhandle region. Sidney is also known as the corporate headquarters of Cabela's, the outdoor recreation retailer.

By Plane

The nearest airports are Western Nebraska Regional Airport (BFF) in Scottsbluff (65 miles north) and Denver International Airport (DEN) approximately 200 miles southwest.

By Car / Road

Sidney is located at the intersection of US-385 and I-80. From North Platte, drive west on I-80 approximately 120 miles (about 2 hours). From Cheyenne, WY, drive east on I-80 approximately 90 miles (about 1.5 hours). From Denver, drive north on US-385 approximately 200 miles (about 3.5 hours).

The city operates a dial-a-ride bus service Monday to Friday from 8AM to 5PM. Each ride costs $1.50. A car is recommended for exploring the surrounding area.
