Why visit Kearney?
Kearney is a city of approximately 34,000 people in south-central Nebraska, home to the University of Nebraska at Kearney (UNK). The westward push of the railroad as the Civil War ended gave birth to the community, and today Kearney serves as a regional center for education, healthcare, and commerce. The city is perhaps best known for its position at the heart of the sandhill crane migration, one of the largest bird migrations in the world.
Each spring between late March and early April, hundreds of thousands of sandhill cranes stop along the central Platte River between North Platte and Grand Island, with Kearney at the center of this spectacular natural event. The shallow waters of the Platte and surrounding meadows provide a perfect resting spot for the cranes, along with ducks, eagles, geese, and the endangered Whooping Crane.
Kearney has a vibrant downtown area known as "The Bricks," centered along Central Avenue near Railroad Street. The city features numerous museums, the iconic Great Platte River Road Archway spanning Interstate 80, and a range of outdoor recreation opportunities. Climate features hot summers (80s–90s°F), cold winters with occasional snow, and pleasant spring and fall seasons.
