Why visit Sedalia?
Sedalia is a city of about 22,000 people in central Missouri, positioned at the crossroads of US Routes 50 and 65. The city is best known as the hometown of ragtime composer Scott Joplin, who lived here in the 1890s and composed some of his most famous works during his Sedalia years. The Scott Joplin Ragtime Festival, held annually in June, draws music enthusiasts from around the world. Sedalia is also the permanent home of the Missouri State Fair, the state's largest annual event, held each August since 1901. The city has a proud agricultural and railroad heritage, reflected in its historic downtown and the Katy Depot heritage site.
The climate is humid continental, with warm, humid summers and cold winters. July and August highs average in the upper 80s to low 90s°F, while January lows drop to around 20°F (-7°C). Spring and fall are the most pleasant seasons, with mild temperatures and lower humidity. The Missouri State Fair (mid-August) is the city's busiest time, and accommodations book up well in advance.
Sedalia's layout follows a classic Midwestern grid, with a courthouse-centered downtown, historic commercial buildings along Main Street, and residential neighborhoods spreading outward. The downtown area has experienced revitalization in recent years, with shops, restaurants, and cultural venues. The Bothwell Hotel, a 1920s landmark, anchors the historic core.

Amtrak serves Sedalia with the daily Missouri River Runner, connecting St. Louis to Kansas City. The Sedalia station is located on Pacific Street and North Osage Avenue. Booking via Amtrak.com in advance typically yields the best fares. The train is a scenic way to arrive and avoids highway driving.
By Car / Road
Sedalia sits at the intersection of US Route 50 (east–west) and US Route 65 (north–south). From Kansas City (100 mi northwest, ~1.5 hr), take US-50 East. From Jefferson City (60 mi east, ~1 hr), take US-50 West. From St. Louis (190 mi east, ~3 hr), take US-50 West or I-70 West to US-65 South.
